BIM Q&A | How to Copy Standard Metric Family Elevations in Revit 2016
Here is the modification method:
1. The default unit for the “Elevation Family” in Revit is meters (m).
2. Open the elevation family you want to modify.
3. Click on the word “Elevation” with your mouse. The selected system family label will appear in the “Properties” palette. Click the “Edit” button in this palette.
4. The “Edit Label” dialog box will pop up. On the right, under “Label Parameters,” select “Facade,” then click the “Hand Button” at the bottom to edit the unit format of the parameters.
5. The “Format” dialog box will appear. The default unit is meters. Choose your desired unit (e.g., millimeters), set decimal places to 0, and click “OK” to confirm.
6. Load the modified elevation family back into the project, overwriting the existing version. You will notice the elevation changes from 4.000 m to 4000 mm.
If you select “Use Project Settings” in step 5, all other options in the “Format” dialog become grayed out and unselectable. The elevation units will then automatically match the length units (including decimal places and unit symbols) set in the project’s “Project Units” settings, which apply to the elevation family.
Follow these steps to use project settings:
1. In the “Format” dialog box, check “Use Project Settings.” Save and load the elevation family into the project.
2. In the project, set the length unit by opening “Project Units” (shortcut: UN). Change the length unit to centimeters (cm) with one decimal place and display the unit symbol. Click “OK.”
3. The elevation unit will update to centimeters.
4. Similarly, if you change the project length unit to inches, the elevation unit will automatically switch to inches.
