A Victorian-style building from the last century stands as a witness to the historical evolution of Julu Road in Shanghai. Time has aged this structure, giving it a unique character that contrasts with the surrounding modern buildings. Thanks to the support of Fritz Hansen, a Danish furniture brand with over 140 years of heritage, this century-old house has been revitalized. It now seamlessly integrates daily life elements of dining, leisure, and entertainment, breathing new life into the space through vibrant energy.

Preserving the Heritage of a Century-Old Style

The integration of dining, leisure, and entertainment with a renowned furniture brand represents a pioneering and unique concept in Shanghai. This project creates a meaningful connection between Fritz Hansen and the historic space across different times, places, and disciplines. Balancing the brand’s distinctive style with the spatial design posed an important challenge for the designers.

Fritz Hansen has collaborated with exceptional designers worldwide, creating products that are timeless, artistic, and of exceptional quality. Hong Designworks embraced this classic style in the design of the second and third floors, delivering a clean, modern aesthetic. The inclusion of Fritz Hansen furniture crafts distinct atmospheres in each setting, with meticulous attention to detail and clearly defined spatial identities.

The Fritz Hansen furniture complements various private room styles, creating simple yet artistic environments where visitors can enjoy a high-quality culinary experience.

The original architectural wooden structures in the old house have become valuable visual references. The designer restored previously damaged wooden elements, preserving the historic character while showcasing the passage of time through the spatial design. These wooden features are prominently displayed along various pathways.

The indoor roofing not only restores the wooden structure but also addresses energy-saving insulation and external aesthetics. The use of a ‘grey space’ indoors helps transition between different functional areas, enhances spatial hierarchy, and effectively conceals mechanical and electrical systems.

The ironwork from the old house has been carefully restored and repurposed as stairway protection. The interplay of dreamy light and shadow from the lighting creates a serene atmosphere, inviting visitors to relax and forget their worries.

Redefining a New Lifestyle

To offer an immersive and integrated shopping experience, the designers aimed for customers to interact with furniture within realistic settings, providing diverse options and unique atmospheres through carefully curated scenes.

△ Cigar Bar
Victorian design elements emerge in the details. Hardwood flooring grounds the space, enhanced by large, diverse area rugs that define distinct zones. The space beautifully balances decorative elegance with natural elements, featuring green plants, artworks for sale, and artistic displays throughout.

Invite two or three friends to the tea room to share tea and unwind, rejuvenating both body and mind. Alternatively, enjoy the sophisticated ambiance of the cigar bar and club, experiencing the charm of Western leisure and entertainment.

Fritz Hansen is more than just a brand; it represents a lifestyle rooted in deep tradition. The blend of dining, leisure, entertainment, and furniture in this historic house redefines modern living, offering a destination for those who cherish quality, embrace life, and enjoy new experiences.
