Japanese architectural firm Aisaka recently unveiled its latest project: the Fukushima Tesoro Kindergarten. Situated within a residential block, the playground’s design is inspired by Italy’s “treasure chest,” reflected in its name. The space accommodates 90 children, encouraging free and creative play.
Following a functional design strategy, private pathways are positioned in enclosed zones, while the kindergarten itself is elevated above ground level on the second floor. This layout preserves a large central outdoor area for activities, safely distanced from nearby motor vehicle traffic.

Aisaka Architects designed Tesoro Kindergarten with an eastward orientation to offer expansive views of distant mountains. The seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces is achieved through intersecting pathways, transforming the building itself into a large playground featuring slides, climbing walls, and stairs of varying sizes.
The kindergarten is enclosed by a flowing curved concrete wall pierced with numerous small openings, enhancing safety and privacy. The structure primarily uses reinforced concrete for durability, complemented by interior and prominently visible exterior wooden wall panels. The roof is coated with easy-to-maintain aluminum zinc alloy, and additional cladding materials are employed in areas exposed to heavy snow.

Within the kindergarten, Aisaka Architects have reserved flexible spaces to accommodate future growth and evolving needs. These include undeveloped outdoor areas that could serve as rooftop vegetable gardens or festival venues, and external flooring that can be converted into wooden decks.
The design team envisions the school not only as a pinnacle of its current state but also as a starting point where educators and staff can pursue their passions in a beloved environment for years to come.
