Why Do 2D Expression Lines in Revit Nested Families Fail to Display When Loaded into a Project?
When nested families include 2D representation model lines with visibility settings, these lines might not appear after loading the family into the project environment. What causes this issue?
As illustrated, a pipe fitting model contains 2D expression lines with visibility configured. When the display mode is set to “Coarse” or “Medium,” these lines are visible. However, in the “Fine” display mode, they do not appear. This occurs because model entity visibility is only enabled in the “Fine” display mode.
When the fitting is loaded as a nested family within an elbow family, both the fitting’s model entities and 2D representation lines are selected together. To ensure the 2D lines display correctly, you need to edit the Visibility/Graphic Overrides and select all detail levels before loading the family into the project.
If the 2D lines still do not show after applying the above method, select the elbow family within the project environment and uncheck the Use Annotation Scale option in the properties bar. This adjustment often resolves the issue.
The root cause is that the family category assigned to nested families does not match the category of the elbow family. Additionally, the subcategories and categories of the 2D expression lines differ. Another solution is to directly modify the nested family’s category and the subcategories of its 2D expression lines to align with the host family.
