Project Background
The overall renovation project of the restaurant and the chosen travel hotel is located in Yutian, a city village in Shenzhen where modern prosperity intersects with old decline. This area reflects the contrast and connection between new and old neighborhoods, bringing the topic of urban renewal to the forefront.

Project Overview
The building has seven floors in total. The basement and sub-basement levels house a restaurant, while floors two through six contain 16 guest rooms. The architectural firm retained the original building’s beam and column framework, using it as a foundation to create a functional, orderly, and vibrant urban space.

Key Features
1. Daylighting
The building’s open floor plan and floor-to-ceiling glass walls create a warm and spacious atmosphere. Thoughtful lighting design enhances the quality of the visitor experience. In certain areas, a deliberate retention of the urban village’s characteristic darkness adds depth and reflects the unique identity of the building, blending harmoniously with the surroundings.

△ Entrance Detail
From the first to the sixth floor, bright and transparent outdoor views along with elegant interplay of light and shadow are seamlessly integrated into the spaces. In the basement, dotted lighting sets a relaxed ambiance. Two distinct atmospheres are created using light sources to suit different moods and occasions.

2. Spatial Structure
The design minimizes the space allocated to public areas to maximize the number and size of guest rooms within the limited footprint. The original building’s beam and column framework is reinforced and used to define spatial order and functional divisions.

3. Functional Zoning
The design breaks away from traditional zoning by dispersing functions within guest rooms to maximize space use and improve the overall guest experience. Bathrooms feature a fully independent “three separation” layout for the shower, toilet, and sink, allowing multiple guests to use the facilities conveniently while maintaining dryness and cleanliness.

4. Spatial Hierarchy
The design introduces vertical height differences to create spatial variety. Corridors and corner spaces are extended to elongate circulation paths, which counteracts the limitations of a small area while preserving a high level of spatial quality and user experience.

5. Materials
The exposed concrete walls offer a simple yet slightly rough texture, contrasted with warm wood accents that bring a sense of warmth. By using materials sourced from the building itself and selecting appropriate finishes, the design achieves a comfortable and natural aesthetic. Formal decorations are removed, allowing the materials themselves to become the primary form of beautification, giving the entire space character and identity.

Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “In architecture, pride, the success of human attraction, and the will to seek power all manifest in visible forms.” This project immerses itself not in industrial upgrades but in connecting people and revitalizing communities. It aims to be more than just a physical space—it strives to become a welcoming place where people are willing to linger amid the fast pace of life.
