How to Effectively Use Filters to Differentiate Components in Revit

How to Effectively Use Filters to Differentiate Components in Revit

In Revit, distinguishing components is essential for various reasons, such as model verification, design revisions, or differentiating design drawings from multiple design firms. To simplify future model maintenance, adding filters to differentiate components is crucial. For example, you can add filters to basement beams to distinguish between different types.

1. Open the Visibility/Graphic Overrides dialog, switch to the Filters tab, and click Add. A popup will appear—select Add Filter. In the dialog box, click Edit/New… as shown in the image.

2. In the pop-up Filter dialog, check the Structural Framing category, then create a new filter as illustrated.

3. After naming the filter, click OK. Next, add filter rules—typically, choose an annotation parameter and set an easy-to-manage condition such as a specific number, as demonstrated.

4. Repeat the above steps to create the necessary number of filters. Select each completed filter and click OK to add them one by one to the view. Then assign different fill patterns and colors to each filter, as shown in the figure.

5. When the annotation value matches the filter’s condition, the beam’s color will automatically change accordingly, as depicted.
