How to Modify the Color Fill Legend in Revit

Once you have placed the legend, you can customize its size, adjust the legend samples, reorder the items, change the graphic appearance of the samples, and edit the legend title.

Adjusting the Legend Size

In the drawing area, select the color fill legend.

Drag the blue circular control upward to move the color swatch to a new column, or drag it downward to return the swatch to its original column. Columns in the legend can have an equal number of samples.

Drag the blue triangular control to adjust the width of the columns.

Adjusting the Size of Legend Samples

With the color fill legend selected in the drawing area, go to the Modify | Color Fill Legend tab and locate the Attributes panel.

Click to open the Type Properties dialog box, then modify the Sample Width and Sample Height values as needed.

Note: Changing these parameters will affect all color fill legends of this type throughout the entire project.

Click OK to confirm your changes.

Reordering Items in the Legend

Select the color fill legend in the drawing area.

Navigate to the Modify | Color Fill Legend tab and open the Scheme panel.

In the Edit Color Scheme dialog box, select a row and use the up or down arrows to move values within the list. These options are only available when the scheme is set to By Value.

Note: Reordering items will impact all project views that use this color scheme.

Click Apply to preview changes, then OK to exit the dialog box.

Changing the Graphic Appearance of the Legend Samples

With the color fill legend selected, go to the Modify | Color Fill Legend tab and open the Scheme panel.

In the Edit Color Scheme dialog box, adjust the color and fill pattern to your desired settings.

Note: Any changes to the graphic appearance will affect all project views using this color scheme.

Click Apply to view the updates, then OK to close the dialog box.

Editing the Legend Title

Select the color fill legend in the drawing area.

Go to the Modify | Color Fill Legend tab and open the Scheme panel.

Edit the title text directly in the dialog box.

Note: Changing the legend title will update all project views that use this color scheme.

Click Apply to see the changes, then OK to exit.

Showing or Hiding Legend Titles

Select the color fill legend in the drawing area.

Navigate to the Modify | Color Fill Legend tab and open the Attributes panel.

In the Type Properties dialog box, check or uncheck the Display Title parameter.

Note: Modifying this setting will affect all color fill legends of this type in the project.

Click OK to confirm.
