How to Transfer a Permanent Software License in Revit
License transfer is only necessary if you have a standalone perpetual license with an active maintenance plan. For single-user desktop subscriptions, multiple installations are allowed. You can temporarily or permanently transfer these permanent licenses from one computer to another.
There are various reasons to transfer a license. For example, you might want to run the software on a portable computer while traveling, or you may have a new computer and no longer plan to use the old one. Depending on the product version you own, the transfer process can be completed as follows:
- For versions 2009 or earlier, use the Portable License Utility.
- For many products from 2010 to 2016, use the License Transfer Utility (LTU).
- For most newer versions, simply log out of the software on one computer and log in on another.
Note: License terms specify how many computers your product can run on simultaneously. Using the product on too many devices may result in activation errors. To avoid these issues and the need for reactivation, always transfer your license to a new computer before using the software there.
Using the License Transfer Utility
Make sure the same version of the product is installed on both the source and target computers.
On the computer from which you want to export the license, close the software.
Launch the License Transfer Utility (LTU):
Windows: In the Start menu, search for the LTU shortcut located in the same folder as your Autodesk product.
macOS: In Finder, navigate to the Applications folder and locate LTU within the product’s directory.
Sign in with your Autodesk credentials.
Next, decide whether to select “Make the license available for public use.”
By default, this option is unchecked, which determines if the license output is private or public:
- Private output (default): Prevents other users from using your license. If the license is not imported to another computer within 14 days, it will automatically become public.
- Public output: Allows transferring the license to another user using the same product and serial number. For example, if permitted by your license agreement, you can transfer the license to a colleague within your organization.
Now, on the target computer where you want to import the license, launch the LTU and log in again.
Enter your Autodesk ID and password, then click Login.
When the License Input Confirmation page appears, print it for your records and then click Completed.
