How to Create Openings for Curved and Irregular Walls in Revit
When modeling in Revit, it’s common to need reserved openings, which can sometimes be irregularly shaped. For regular flat walls, you can easily use the “Modify” tab and the “Edit Outline” command to create these openings. But how do you create irregular openings on curved walls? Let’s explore the process together below.
1. Start by drawing a semi-circular curved wall in a new project. After selecting the wall, you’ll notice that editing the wall’s contour is not an available option. However, you can still use the wall opening tool to create regular rectangular openings, as shown in the image below.
2. Now, let’s learn how to create non-rectangular openings. Use a standard void model from the built-in families to stretch and shape a hollow form, as demonstrated in the figure.
3. Next, create a reference plane and set it as your work plane. On this plane, draw the desired shape of the opening. Then, manually stretch or define the start and end points of the void extrusion so that it intersects with the curved wall, as illustrated in the image below.
After stretching, make sure to apply the Cut command to have the void properly cut through the wall.
4. Once the void has cut the wall, click to finish the model. The final result will look like the example shown.
Key takeaway: When conventional components can’t fully meet your project needs, combining them with family components—especially built-in families—can be more convenient and practical. This technique is particularly useful for creating features like trenches in floor slabs.
