How to Quickly Modify Elevation Names in Revit
When creating elevations in Revit, it’s common to want the elevation names to automatically sort as 1F, 2F, 3F, and so on. However, even if you set the elevation names to 1F, 2F in the template file, the names often appear as 1G, 1H, etc., when you start a new project. Why does this happen, and how can you fix it? Below, we will address these questions step by step. See the illustration below:
1. This issue is related to Revit software itself. Revit automatically increments elevation names based on the last letter in the label. For example, when creating grid lines, axis numbers follow an alphabetical and numerical order. If you set an elevation to 1F in the template, Revit will continue with 1G, 1H, and so forth in the project.
To have elevations labeled as 1F, 2F, etc., you can reverse the naming convention by changing 1F to F1. In a new project, the increments will then follow F2, F3, and so on, which resolves the issue. Refer to the figure below for an example:
2. However, elevations on building facades are typically labeled in the order 1F, 2F, etc. How can you achieve this effect? This requires modifying the header family.
First, locate the header family you want to edit in the Project Browser. Right-click the family and select Edit. See the screenshot below:
Once inside the Family Editor, select the name label, then go to the Modify tab and choose Edit Tags. In the pop-up dialog labeled Edit Tags, enter the suffix F in the Label Parameters field. Click OK and reload the family into your project, as shown below:
After these changes, the elevation names will increment as 1F, 2F, and so on, as desired. See the final result in the figure below:
