The VGI Residence is a private home located in North Jakarta, Indonesia. The design tackles two main challenges: the region’s extremely hot and humid climate and the narrow plot of land, measuring just 9 by 32 meters (288 m²), provided by the client. Our design philosophy emphasizes passive cooling and natural ventilation, grounded in a thorough understanding of the site and local climate.
As a result, the VGI Residence functions like a “breathing device,” allowing air to flow continuously through the main social spaces via three indoor gaps. Air is guided through the narrow, corridor-like site from the main entrance to every corner of the building by these internal openings.

Given the narrow site, the boundary walls serve as protective barriers, creating small “pocket gardens” filled with sunlight and tropical plants around the house. These pocket gardens, along with the internal voids, act as semi-vegetated light wells that seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor spaces, infusing a soft tropical ambiance throughout the home.

In today’s climate context, the residence aims to maximize natural light, fresh air, and energy efficiency. It also incorporates an air conditioning system, which is isolated within the indoor environment by a series of sealed doors and windows to maintain climate control.
Environmental considerations extend to the choice of materials. Cast-in-place concrete and marble help keep the interior and courtyard cool, shielding the home from Jakarta’s intense heat. Outdoor wood details are crafted from ebony, prized for its resilience in tropical climates. These material choices underscore a commitment to aesthetics, durability, low maintenance, and reduced energy consumption.
