Preparing CAD Files for Import into Revit
When working with Revit, CAD drawings are frequently used as a base. However, these drawings often require preprocessing before they can be effectively imported into Revit. Below are the essential steps to properly prepare CAD files.
1. Upon receiving a CAD drawing, first open all layers by pressing Ctrl+A to select all and ensure all layers are visible and unlocked. Avoid freezing any layers, as all should be displayed, as shown in the image.
2. Many CAD drawings are grouped into blocks, which can hinder editing later on. To address this, use the Explode command (shortcut key X) to break down blocks into individual elements for easier modification.
3. Remove any unnecessary draft elements, as illustrated in the picture, to keep the drawing clean.
4. Revit has limits on the number of elements it can import. Therefore, delete any redundant drawings beforehand, retaining only the necessary parts, as demonstrated in the figure.
5. After cleaning up the drawing, use Ctrl+C to copy the required sections, then paste them back as blocks using Ctrl+Shift+V. Afterward, delete the original drawings to streamline the file.
6. Finally, run the PU command to purge unnecessary items from the CAD file, then save it. This step is critical for reducing file size and optimizing performance, as shown in the image.
To illustrate the impact, compare the file sizes before and after using the PU command. The difference is clearly noticeable in the figure.
