Wall Levels and Common Issues in Revit
1. Wall Hierarchy in Revit
The hierarchy of Revit walls is illustrated in the figure below.
When drawing walls in Revit, you first need to select the reference line. You can choose either the core centerline or the wall centerline. In symmetrical walls, the core centerline coincides with the wall centerline.
2. Specific Wall Levels
1) Structure __AI_S_SC_0_: This layer must be contained within the core boundary.
2) Substrate: Materials used as a base, such as plywood or gypsum board.
3) Insulation/Air Layer: Consists of insulation or soundproofing materials.
4) Coating Layer: A thin film that prevents water vapor penetration, with zero thickness.
5) Surface Layer 1_AI_LBT_SC_0_: Typically the outermost layer, for example, the exterior surface of an external wall.
6) Surface Layer: Usually the innermost layer, such as the interior surface of an exterior wall.
Note: The core layer thickness must be greater than or equal to zero. Therefore, the coating layer must lie outside the core boundary, and the thickness of non-coating layers should be 4 mm.
3. Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: How do I switch the inside and outside of a wall if it is flipped upside down?
Select the wall and press the Spacebar to flip it.
Q2: How can I select all walls at once when selecting a ‘Chain’ building wall?
Press the Tab key to select all walls simultaneously.
Q3: Why do I get the error message “Can’t raise the priority of layer functions from the core boundary to the surface level” when building a wall?
This error occurs because the wall’s layer hierarchy does not conform to the required layer rules.
The wall hierarchy is represented as: XXX layer __AI_S_SC0__
Layer Rules:
- 1) Lower numbers indicate higher priority. Higher priority layers should be positioned at the core, while lower priority layers should be on the outside.
- 2) When connecting two walls: The connection priority is given within the core boundary, favoring the layer with higher priority.
