The Bao’an Cultural Complex is a newly established public cultural park located in Shenzhen. It boasts a stunning view of Qianhai Bay and the South China Sea, offering unique seaside scenery while being adjacent to bustling urban commercial areas. Covering an area of 110,000 square meters, the complex includes a library, a cultural and arts center, and a performing arts center.
The first phase, comprising the library, youth palace, and cultural and arts center, has been completed. The Performing Arts Center is currently under construction and is expected to be finished by 2020.

▲ Location Plan
The overall plan of the cultural park aligns the three main buildings along a single axis stretching from the city center to the coastline. Between these buildings, a series of public squares create an interconnected and cohesive park environment. These public spaces offer a waterfront experience for residents and serve as a link between the city and the seaside.

▲ General Layout Plan
The facade designs draw inspiration from traditional southern Chinese arts, particularly wood and ivory carving. The consistent use of perforated facades across the three buildings ensures visual cohesion, while the detailed variations on each facade give each structure its own distinctive character.

The library, positioned closest to the square’s water feature, spans 31,853 square meters and houses reading areas, library facilities, management offices, a museum, and an exhibition hall. A 20-meter-high vertical atrium extends the landscape from the public square into the building’s interior, creating a central gathering space.

▲ Inside the Library
Adjacent to the library, the Youth Palace and Cultural and Arts Center cover a combined area of 11,316 square meters. The design consists of two separate buildings enclosing a central outdoor courtyard and circular theater. The Youth Palace includes technology exhibition halls and children’s art galleries, while the Cultural and Arts Center offers performance spaces, art studios, and galleries.
The central courtyard and circular theater connect these two wings, introducing natural light and ventilation while serving as a vibrant social hub.

The Performing Arts Center, currently under construction, covers 20,660 square meters and is located on the southern edge of the park, adjacent to the bay. The ground floor features retail shops and restaurants, designed to attract visitors and connect the building with the city.
A grand staircase leads up to the second-floor 1,500-seat performance hall. The center also includes a smaller 600-seat venue and an inclined structure at a 15-degree angle, which offers a public passageway leading to a large rehearsal hall, overlooking the bay and offering panoramic views.

With its multifunctional buildings and open, inclusive public squares, the complex forms a unified whole that will become a new cultural hub for Shenzhen, revitalizing the entire area.
