The design process for prefabricated building components is more complex than that of municipal transportation prefabricated components. It is characterized by being highly project-specific, systematic, and professional. In contrast, the design of standardized prefabricated components for municipal transportation is simpler, focusing mainly on standardized mold design and standard component processing drawings.
Typically, the design of prefabricated building components is integrated into the overall construction drawing design of prefabricated modular buildings. This integration is a primary concern for many companies new to prefabricated modular construction, particularly regarding how to approach the design process.
Several local standards and the upcoming national precast concrete assembly specifications introduce the concept of equivalency with cast-in-place concrete structures. Based on this, the following design process is more aligned with precast assembled structural buildings:
- Consider the characteristics of the relevant prefabrication system and complete the architectural scheme design. If necessary, preliminary fine decoration design should also be performed.
- Perform the structural calculations based on the cast-in-place structural system, with some adjustments for prefabricated parameters (especially for prefabricated residential buildings), and develop preliminary construction drawings.
- Complete the detailed design of prefabricated components, including component processing drawings, connection node drawings, reserved and embedded processing drawings, installation layout drawings, and the design of insulation connectors.
- Finalize the complete set of construction drawings.
