Is Learning BIM on Your Own Challenging? A Beginner’s Guide to Self-Studying Revit

Recently, I’ve noticed many newcomers in the BIM community frequently asking the same questions in discussion groups: Is self-learning BIM difficult? How should I get started? How can I study Revit on my own? Before I answer, I want to ask—do you truly have time for systematic study? Are you aware of how much time self-learning requires? Do you understand the challenges you’ll face? Are you prepared for them? Setting those concerns aside, let me share my personal experience briefly.

1. How to Start Self-Learning BIM

1.1 Build a Theoretical Foundation

Some believe that learning BIM just means practicing with the software. I used to think so too, but quickly realized this approach creates difficulties later on. Without a theoretical foundation, you might subconsciously assume BIM is merely modeling software. This limited mindset restricts your design thinking, which can negatively affect design quality.

During construction, such a mindset makes collaboration difficult, as teams tend to work in isolation. In operations and maintenance, reliance on old habits reduces efficiency. Therefore, learning BIM theory is essential. Any technology or concept is inseparable from its underlying theory. BIM theory is truly the soul of BIM thinking—without it, even the best technology cannot deliver expected benefits.

1.2 Use Books to Support Your Learning

Books remain vital for self-study. For theory, consider titles like Guan Pei’s BIM Overview and What is That Thing Called BIM, or Chuck Eastman’s BIM Handbook (available in Traditional Chinese). For technology, focusing on Revit as an example, technical books from platforms like Mars Classroom cover everything from beginner to advanced levels. Combining these books with hands-on software practice is generally sufficient.

1.3 Utilize Video Tutorials

There are plenty of video tutorials available today, but many are basic or lack quality. Often, these videos are created by students or trainees with limited experience. While acceptable for beginners, they won’t help when encountering complex problems or real-world project challenges.

If possible, I recommend investing in high-quality paid courses. These often cost between 300-500 yuan and provide far better instruction. Beware of extremely cheap or massive video collections on platforms like Taobao—they usually lack quality. Reliable video platforms include Yimi Online School (a longstanding provider), Zhulong (also well-established), and Zhucheng Online School (a newer option).

2. How to Self-Study Revit

2.1 Manage Your Time Wisely Based on Your Needs

Self-learning Revit demands a significant personal effort and disciplined time management. Since there’s no fixed schedule, learners must organize their study time effectively. BIM software learning requires practice to master, so consistent effort is key.

This approach suits college students without work pressures. However, for professionals busy with daytime jobs, squeezing in Revit study often yields limited results. When encountering problems, many turn to online resources for answers. If the problem can’t be solved online or the guidance is inadequate, it can worsen the situation. This is far less effective than direct, face-to-face instruction.

2.2 Combine Self-Study with Face-to-Face Instruction When Possible

Face-to-face teaching allows students to learn through a teacher’s explanations and sharing of experience. Students can link course content to their own work or profession and identify relevant entry points. When problems arise, teachers can provide immediate solutions or share their expertise, greatly improving learning efficiency.

Self-learning depends heavily on individual perseverance and determination. Overall, face-to-face learning tends to be more effective than studying alone.

3. Hands-On Practice with Revit Software

Revit and other Autodesk products share some interface similarities and shortcuts, which helps those with CAD experience pick up Revit faster. Revit itself is easy to start but difficult to master. Even beginners or non-architecture professionals can grasp basic operations within three to ten days.

However, mastering parametric modeling and building complex models requires dedication. Self-learners can use online videos or books to practice modeling, but this knowledge often remains superficial. The difference between self-study and guided learning with a teacher is significant.

To wrap up, is BIM self-learning difficult? How do you get started? How to self-study Revit? I hope this overview helps you. Despite my personal experience, I faced many challenges, especially with tricky problems. When I couldn’t find solutions online, I often felt anxious. Therefore, I still recommend formal BIM training whenever possible—it can save you time and effort and deliver better results.
