Traditional inspection methods rely on flat drawings or window displays, requiring inspectors to compare paper documents with the actual objects on the construction site. This process involves matching two-dimensional information with three-dimensional structures. When the inspected object is complex or represented by numerous drawings, understanding the details can be time-consuming and may require assistance from designers.

Here, the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) with Building Information Modeling (BIM) offers a promising solution. BIM models include not only geometric data but also non-geometric information, theoretically covering the needs of various inspection projects. For measurement inspections, BIM models correspond directly to physical objects, allowing inspectors to use AR to overlay and compare these models with real-world structures, enabling efficient quantity counting and length measurement.

To implement this, the BIM model can be converted into an AR-compatible format and overlaid onto physical structures. For instance, the steel reinforcement model from BIM can be exported to Unity, a game physics engine software. Within Unity, the object structure is processed to retain the geometric and attribute information necessary for inspection and testing. Additionally, Google’s ARCore software development kit enables virtual objects to be presented and accurately positioned through AR, overlaying them on live images for verification.

Combining AR and BIM significantly improves the efficiency of steel bar inspections. Testing shows that compared to traditional measurement methods, this approach can reduce on-site inspection time while maintaining acceptable accuracy. However, expanding this method to more detailed audit projects still presents challenges to be addressed:

  1. Inspection Tolerance Limits: The allowable error margin directly impacts the feasibility of AR applications. For example, when verifying the number of main reinforcements, the inspection standard requires zero errors. However, for smaller reinforcement bars, it is difficult to visually confirm the count through overlapped AR images at normal inspection distances. Future improvements in controlling AR inspection distance may enhance the feasibility of inspecting smaller components.
  2. Positioning Accuracy: Due to positioning limitations, virtual models may drift relative to actual steel bars, requiring manual adjustments. To improve stability, alternative positioning methods can be explored, such as using images or markers attached to specific locations, or fixing steel bars in known positions and capturing them with stationary cameras.
  3. Image Overlay and Masking Issues: Overlaying images can cause masking problems, making it hard for users to distinguish between the physical steel bars, the virtual steel bar models, and areas where they overlap. This can be addressed by simplifying the steel reinforcement models: displaying only the steel bars relevant to the specific inspection item, or reducing the model complexity to include only components with specific parameters. For example, when checking spacing, the model could be represented as a linear shape or show only one side of the reinforcement instead of the full BIM model, thereby decluttering the visual content and improving inspection clarity.
