Experience and Reflections on BIM Application (Approximately 1000 Words)

The application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) currently faces challenges due to the lack of established operating guidelines and unified standards for building component models. Variations in modeling methods and the type of information imported often lead to different results for the same building project across different BIM teams. There is no objective standard or mechanism to determine which approach is correct or superior, especially given the varying professional perspectives involved.

In reality, even with BIM, errors, omissions, and misunderstandings can still occur within the 3D information model as part of the design outcome. However, using 3D building information models in architectural or engineering design helps eliminate ambiguities that typically exist in traditional designs. Subtle errors are harder to conceal, which could lead to clearer identification of design responsibilities in the future.

I recall attending a conference on the future of architecture where the speaker mentioned the possibility of mandating BIM usage for public projects. The proposal included penalizing designers whose BIM-related errors reach a certain threshold once relevant authorities identify mistakes in BIM operations. It’s unclear what motivates the government’s eagerness to promote BIM—whether it’s the belief that BIM can prevent errors and omissions, or a desire to demonstrate BIM adoption internationally. Perhaps it’s a combination of wanting to improve domestic architectural design and construction standards quickly while being responsive to public needs.

Ultimately, the government has the authority to require BIM in public works, and the general public has no objections to this mandate.

That said, I personally remain cautious about mandating BIM implementation at this stage. Compared to countries with years of BIM development, our country has yet to establish a solid foundation for the BIM ecosystem. We lack a public standard for BIM implementation, file naming conventions, layer naming protocols, and even essential work category codes. There is no common component library or material database either.

Pushing for immediate BIM adoption risks creating fragmented standards, with each company or project following its own approach. Independent development based on self-interest and exclusivity, without mechanisms for sharing experiences and best practices, will hinder BIM’s progress and likely cause chaos within the industry.

Being somewhat removed from the core of this industry, I’m unsure who should lead the efforts to build these foundational standards. What I do know is that rushing BIM adoption now will probably mean investing more time and energy later to resolve the resulting disorder.

I also have concerns about the current state of BIM adoption. BIM remains a relatively new concept and technology in China’s engineering and construction sectors. Aside from a few visionary manufacturers experimenting with it, most civilian designers and construction companies lack the capacity to effectively apply BIM.

Developing BIM capabilities requires time for training, nurturing talent, and gaining operational experience. Purchasing modeling software is not a plug-and-play solution. So far, there is no indication that the engineering industry has established consistent operating standards.

If authorities impose penalties without first setting clear rules and frameworks, private practitioners could face unjust legal liabilities. This may ultimately prevent BIM from taking root in our market or reduce it to a mere formality without real impact.

That concludes my experience and reflections on BIM application. I hope this article proves helpful to everyone interested in this topic!
