The Odunpazari Modern Museum (OMM), designed by Kuma Yanwu Architecture Firm, is a prominent new art museum located in the university town of Eskişehir in northwest Türkiye. This 4,500 square meter facility, now open to the public, houses a collection of 1,000 modern and contemporary artworks.

The building’s design resembles stacked timber blocks, reflecting the surrounding streetscape and paying homage to the neighborhood’s history as a timber trading market.

According to Kengo Kuma, the concept behind OMM is to use architecture as a bridge between people and art. This philosophy, shared by Kengo Kuma Architects and project partner Yuki Ikeguchi, draws deep inspiration from the history, culture, community, and streetscape of Odunpazari.

They aimed for the building to resonate on multiple levels and to invigorate Eskişehir by becoming a central, attractive gathering space in the city.

The museum features three levels. The ground floor offers a spacious exhibition area designed to complement the rhythm and scale of the surrounding urban fabric. The upper floors contain smaller galleries dedicated to more intimate artworks.

A central atrium floods the interior with natural light and visually connects the different floors. Notable highlights include the largest bamboo installation ever created by artist Tanabe Chikuunsai IV, alongside two digital art installations by Cotton Candy Laser Feast.

Errol Tabanka, a businessman and art collector who founded OMM, commented on the opening: “Today’s ceremony marks the culmination of a visionary journey for everyone involved. We are thrilled to present this unique building and art collection, and to welcome visitors from around the world to my hometown of Eskişehir.”
