Download the BIM Plugin for Twinmotion Dynamic Link with Revit Model Integration

Plugin Function: Twinmotion dynamic linking enables one-click synchronization between Autodesk® Revit® models and Twinmotion 2019. If rendering needs to be done on a different computer, this plugin allows you to export the Revit project directly to FBX format, which is fully supported by Twinmotion.

To download Twinmotion, please visit this link.

Sync Plugin Features:

  • Real-time, direct synchronization of Revit models with Twinmotion® 2019.
  • Any changes made to project models or materials in Revit will instantly appear in Twinmotion.
  • Standard materials, character models, and tree models are automatically converted to corresponding assets from the Twinmotion resource library.
  • Standard BIM information from Revit models is transmitted and displayed within BIMMotion in Twinmotion.
  • Model optimization reduces mesh count to enhance performance.

Export Function:

  • Export models, materials, and textures to FBX files.
  • Optimize Revit models by reducing the number of mesh surfaces.

Plugin Version:

V2.0.0

Compatible Revit Versions:

2017 to 2019

General Usage Instructions:

Once installed (see Installation/Uninstall guide), you will find the plugin under the Twinmotion ribbon in your Revit interface.

  • Click the ‘Browse in Twinmotion’ button to synchronize the current Revit model with Twinmotion 2019.
  • Each time you click the ‘Browse in Twinmotion’ button, your current project will update automatically in Twinmotion.
  • Any changes to models or materials will be reflected immediately in Twinmotion.
  • Standard materials, characters, and tree models are automatically replaced with corresponding assets from the Twinmotion library.
  • Use the ‘Settings’ button to adjust synchronization parameters.

Settings Explained:

Optimize the Model: Enabling this reduces the number of 3D mesh surfaces, which improves performance. For example, if your model contains many railings, this option will simplify the mesh count for better optimization.

Use Twinmotion Material: When checked, standard Revit materials are replaced with Twinmotion materials, including RPC trees and character models. If unchecked, the original Revit maps will be transferred to Twinmotion.

Export BIM Information: This option transfers standard BIM data from your Revit model into Twinmotion.

Ignore Objects Smaller Than (meters): To avoid clutter, objects below a specified size (length, width, height) will not be synchronized. Note that family-based objects are exempt from this filter.

Merge Options (Dropdown Menu):

  • Merge by Family: Combines all objects belonging to the same family into one geometric model.
  • Merge by Material: Splits and merges objects based on their material.
  • None: No merging; all objects remain separate. (Note: Complex Revit models may generate many objects, which can impact performance.)

Exporting FBX Files:

Click the ‘Export’ button to open the FBX export parameter panel.

Export Options:

  • Export Selection: Exports only the selected objects in the scene.
  • Export Visible Items: Exports only objects visible in the current view.

Texture Export Options:

  • Do not export
  • Copy to specified folder: Saves Revit material texture maps to a chosen folder.
  • Collect to save file: Embeds texture maps directly into the exported FBX file.

Merge Options (Dropdown Menu): Same as described above for synchronization.

Grid Quality (Dropdown Menu): Selects the mesh quality for exported 3D models, which affects Twinmotion performance:

  • Optimization (for vertical objects): Reduces mesh quality to optimize models like railings, but may reduce surface visual fidelity.
  • Revit General Settings: Maintains Revit’s default mesh quality without affecting surface detail.

Include Linked Documents: Choose whether to include files linked to the Revit project during export.

Ignore Objects Smaller Than (meters): Excludes objects below specified dimensions from the FBX export, except for family-based objects.

After setting your preferences, click ‘Export’, select the destination folder, and start the export process.

Once the FBX file is created, import it into Twinmotion as you would with any other file. During import, you can choose to ‘Keep File Hierarchy’ to preserve the organization of objects from your Revit scene.
