Situated by a lake in the Perth Chain Wetland Lake area, this house’s architectural design perfectly integrates with the surrounding landscape. Both the architect and client aimed to create a residence that reflects the local environment and climate, while also embodying their personal character and values.

The RZB House (Red Zephyr Blue) design is inspired by its natural surroundings. It allows gentle breezes to flow through, balancing warmth (red) and coolness (blue) to improve comfort. Louvers at both ends and a thermal chimney enable residents to adjust the indoor climate depending on the season and time of day.

Inside, a series of active water pools help generate fresh air and power an evaporative cooling system. The upper level features open aged wooden eaves and a small aerial garden, blending natural elements with architectural design.

The private music room is designed to balance aesthetics with acoustics, offering excellent soundproofing and spacious, sturdy bookshelves. Above the music room, the art studio opens up to the outdoors in a unique way: an open balcony extends toward the street, while a panel window playfully connects the terrace with the interior living space.

The kitchen occupies a central position on the first floor, surrounded by an open dining area, a covered terrace, a pond, garden, and a summer pavilion. The residents especially enjoy sharing this inviting living space and garden with family and friends.

The design encompasses many thoughtful elements, including careful management of air conditioning emissions, the use of patterned bricks and stones, radiant heating, minimal lighting, ethically sourced wood, unique plants, productive gardens, 25,000 liters of rainwater collection, and solar energy harvesting. The house achieves a 6.8-star rating and relies solely on passive cooling. The RZB residence serves as a relaxing retreat where family and friends are welcomed and where local red and blue dragonflies are part of the shared experience.
