Configuring Pipeline Connection Methods in AutoCAD Plant 3D There are multiple connection methods available depending on the types of end codes used. So, how do you set this up?
1. Open the Project Settings.
2. Navigate to Plant 3D DWG Settings – Pipeline Connection Settings.
3. Here, you can add, modify, or delete connection methods as needed.
When laying out pipelines, the software determines whether the pipes connect to other pipes, equipment, or fittings. It does this by matching the endpoint code types at both ends of the connection against the settings you have configured. If a matching endpoint configuration exists, the connection is allowed and the appropriate fasteners are added automatically.
For example:
When connecting flanges, the software adds washers and screw sets. These components are defined in your settings, and while they may serve as placeholders that don’t always appear in the 3D model, they will show up in the Bill of Materials (BOM).
Connection settings are divided into two categories: simple connections and combination connections.
Simple Connections:
These involve fasteners such as welds or bolt sets used to join pipelines. The software provides default simple connection types like welded, flange, and socket connections for pipes with matching nominal diameters. Supporting components, such as washers, are also specified within simple connections.
Combination Connections:
These refer to connection components or joints that enable pipelines to be connected, such as neck welding flanges. Default combination connection types include the Automatic Flange. This option adds flange connection components automatically when the pipeline and fittings have matching diameter, pressure rating, and sealing surface.
Note:
1. Even if flanges already exist in your catalog, when conditions meet the criteria for the Automatic Flange, the software will add flanges as defined in your settings. If the flanges are included in your catalog, those versions will be used for connections.
2. It is not possible to customize the list of available fasteners within simple connections, nor can these be added to the Plant 3D category definitions.
