About BIM Collaborative Work
I’ve discussed this topic extensively before, and recently, many friends have asked me about it again. Today, I will introduce the different modes of BIM collaborative work and explain their respective advantages and disadvantages.
1. Single Point Centralized Collaborative Mode
Advantages and disadvantages from the owner’s perspective: Centralizing the operations of various professional design teams facilitates real-time communication and coordination, reducing the hassle and costs associated with document exchanges. This improves overall design efficiency and shortens the project timeline. Design data can be stored in real-time on the owner’s central server, ensuring effective data security. However, this mode requires significant workspace, as well as expenses for establishing, managing, and maintaining the necessary software and hardware.
Advantages and disadvantages from the contractor’s perspective: Each design team must possess strong independent operational capabilities, and on-site personnel need to be highly skilled. Labor costs may increase due to the need for specialized staff. Project schedules can be restricted by factory access control policies. In high-tech factory projects, obtaining technical resources directly from the parent company is challenging due to strict information security measures, resulting in higher design management costs.
2. Remote Collaborative Mode Across Different Locations
Advantages and disadvantages from the owner’s perspective: Since each professional contractor operates from different locations, graphic information control is dispersed. Enhanced security measures and management protocols are necessary to ensure smooth, accurate, and real-time data access from all parties. However, the software and hardware setup costs for the project are relatively lower.
Advantages and disadvantages from the contractor’s perspective: Each team works within their own company environment, benefiting from better control over resources, staffing, scheduling, and technical support. Regular on-site coordination meetings are still required to align efforts.
3. Hybrid Collaborative Mode
Advantages and disadvantages from the owner’s perspective: This mode combines the benefits and drawbacks of both centralized and remote collaborative approaches. In addition to the challenges associated with BIM project management, it demands more control measures, leading to increased asset management and higher software and hardware costs.
Advantages and disadvantages from the contractor’s perspective: The hybrid mode merges the pros and cons of the two previous methods. Most of the design work can be completed within the contractor’s own company, reducing design costs. Temporary expatriate staff are only needed for limited periods, offering more flexibility in manpower allocation.
That concludes the overview of the modes of BIM collaborative work and their respective advantages and disadvantages. I hope this article has been helpful to everyone!
