A Clear Guide to Reading the Automatic Unfolding Diagram of Revit Reinforcement Shapes

Understanding the Automatic Unfolding Diagram of Revit Reinforcement Shapes

The automatic unfolding function of steel bar shapes efficiently fills the concrete element with reinforcement bars. For linear shapes—such as a single steel bar segment, with or without hooks—the unfolding occurs in two directions until it reaches the reference point defined by the protective layer. Multi-segment shapes unfold in multiple main directions, continuing until they find the appropriate reference.

The diagram below illustrates how the automatic expansion behaves with different steel bar shapes and cursor positions. The green line represents the steel reinforcement’s protective layer and the general outline of the concrete element. Black arrows indicate the possible range of mouse movement. A black rectangular box with gray arrows marks the extended bounding box used to adjust the steel bars’ shape and size.

These examples highlight key aspects of the steel bars’ automatic unfolding behavior but are not exhaustive. No matter the shape or size of the concrete element, the steel bars will automatically extend to cover all effective areas within the concrete body.
