Understanding Section Box Display in Revit Family Template 3D Views

How Revit Displays Section Boxes in Family Template 3D Views

By default, section boxes are not visible in the 3D view of a family template. When working with densely packed components, adding section boxes can help manage visibility. But does this improve performance? Let’s explore this using a “Conceptual Volume” model as an example.

Modeling the upper and lower members in 3D is relatively fast and precise, especially when profiles are used. However, the property panel lacks a dedicated option for profiles, which makes working within family templates somewhat inconvenient.

So, how do we solve this? (This is likely what many users want to know.)

To enable the section box, go to the Project Browser and select 3D Views > 3D. You will then see the Section Box option appear in the properties panel. Simply click to activate it.

And that’s how you enable the section box in a family template. This method works for other family templates as well!
