The project is located in Lingang New City, Pudong, Shanghai, within the BIM Architecture East New District. The surrounding area consists of seven residential neighborhoods, split into three zones: a community commercial center, a commercial street, and hotel-style apartments. Inspired by the concept of a “marketplace,” the design creates a series of human-scale spaces along both sides of the river. The development brings people together and offers a distinctive shopping experience that is closely connected to nature.

Marketplace Concept
The project has been envisioned as a modern community lifestyle hub with traditional market-style commercial units. The goal is to fully utilize the potential of the site by grouping small commercial buildings, creating a series of vibrant, human-scale spaces. These spaces reflect the lively atmosphere of a market, drawing residents from the surrounding neighborhoods into the commercial heart of the development.

Two “mini-markets” have been designed along the riverside, starting from public life centers on both sides. The larger commercial center is situated on the northwest side, featuring terraced steps, green leisure plazas, and riverfront landscapes. This area serves as a “small hill” within the market, forming a welcoming transition between the river and the commercial center.

▲ Northeast Side Hotel-style Apartments
On the northeast side, eight standalone shops of one to three stories are arranged, with a 12-story hotel-style apartment building placed in an L-shape at the northeast corner. This layout encloses two curving commercial streets and three squares, with small commercial buildings freely arranged at the corners. The result is an inviting, diverse, and dynamic spatial experience.

Green Core
The two mini-markets along the river are connected by green landscaping, which is a unique aspect of the project. Two triangular landscaped plazas, linked by a bridge, form the core of the entire development. The riverfront space is a valuable and lively public area, so the design focuses the main commercial frontage toward the water.

The landscape system centers around pedestrian plazas formed by the three land plots, with scattered spaces around the buildings creating a “capillary green network” tailored to the site. The pedestrian paths are intentionally designed as irregular lines, making the retail spaces easy to explore and ensuring greenery is always nearby.

Atmosphere
The commercial flow patterns of the project reflect the core idea of the “marketplace.” While the arrangement may appear spontaneous and informal, it is in fact carefully planned. Every shop within the market enjoys a prominent entrance and exposure, making the area ideal for leisurely strolls and immersing visitors in a lively commercial atmosphere.

The market is made up of numerous small buildings, each with its own distinctive character—varying in height, shape, color, and roof slope. These buildings are clustered together along the river, creating a rich and varied interior environment. This generates a series of free-flowing streets, corners, and small plazas within the marketplace.

The exterior design features modern sloping roofs, emphasizing each building’s individuality and creating a relaxed, small-scale ambiance. Warm colors dominate the facades, which are constructed with a variety of materials—including coatings, bricks, and aluminum panels. This combination results in rich textures and the feeling of a naturally developed area, where buildings from different eras come together harmoniously.
