How to Change the Boundary Position of Room Area in Revit
By default, Revit calculates room areas using the wall surface layers as boundaries. However, you can modify this boundary position to use the wall center, the wall core layer, or the center of the wall core layer instead. Please note that the boundary position setting applies globally—meaning it affects all rooms within the project and cannot be adjusted individually for each room.
To change the boundary position, go to the Architecture tab, then click the dropdown menu in the Room and Area panel (under area and volume calculation).
In the Area and Volume Calculation dialog box, under the Calculate tab, select one of the following options for Room Area Calculation:
- Wall Surface Layer: The room boundary aligns with the wall’s interior surface layer.
- Wall Center: The room boundary is positioned at the centerline of the wall.
- Wall Core Layer: The boundary is located at the inner or outer layer of the wall core closest to the room.
- Center of Wall Core Layer: The boundary lies along the centerline of the wall core layer.
After selecting the desired option, click Confirm to apply the changes.
Note: These boundary settings do not affect IFC-based walls. When working with linked IFC files, walls use face levels as the room boundaries.
