How to Set Railings and Handrails for Curved Stairs in Revit
While working on a practice exam, I encountered a challenge when creating a curved staircase from a blueprint. After sketching the staircase and clicking to complete, Revit automatically generated railings and handrails, as shown in the image below:
However, this result was clearly not what I intended. When trying to modify the railings, I attempted various methods such as “Draw Path,” “Place on stairs/ramps,” and “Pick New Host,” but none of these commands produced the desired effect.
To my surprise, I discovered that the railing path must be drawn in segments. Here’s how you can achieve the correct setup:
1. Select the Railing command.
2. Use the Pick Line method to select the curved edge of the staircase, as illustrated below:
3. Drag the endpoint of the line to adjust the length, covering one section of the staircase.
4. After completing one segment, continue using Pick Line to adjust and draw the next segment.
By repeating these steps, you will create the railing in sections along the curve, as shown in the example above. Finally, click Finish to complete the process.
