Understanding How Revit Calculates Stair Volume

How Revit Calculates Stair Volume

When creating a staircase schedule in Revit, you might notice that the available fields do not include a “Volume” option, as shown in the image. This means you cannot directly extract the staircase volume using the standard schedule method.

However, you can extract the stair area by using a material takeoff schedule. First, make sure the stairs have material information assigned, as illustrated below.

Next, create a material takeoff schedule and select the “Stairs” category, as demonstrated in the figure.

Within the material takeoff schedule, select the fields “Material: Name” and “Material: Volume”, as shown in the example.

This approach allows you to cleverly calculate the volume of the staircase based on the volume of the assigned materials, as indicated in the accompanying image.

Alternatively, you can model the entire staircase as a regular 3D model. After importing the project, you can add a property that includes the “Volume” attribute, as shown in the figure.

Summary: In the context of Revit modeling workflows, especially in China, detailed schedules are commonly used to calculate component quantities. By using a material takeoff schedule, the volume of materials is computed to effectively determine the quantity of components for construction projects.
