Another method for managing element visibility hierarchy in Revit! In the Revit modeling process, certain components of elements need to be displayed only in specific views. For example, some parts of a door family might be shown in plan view but hidden in elevation or 3D views. The door’s plan representation appears in the plan view, while the door opening direction is displayed in the elevation view—not in plan or 3D views. Similarly, detailed door components like the door handle might be visible in plan view only. In general, controlling whether elements appear in coarse, medium, or fine detail levels requires specific settings. Below is a concise explanation of how to manage these visibility controls.
1. While editing a family, select the elements whose visibility or graphics you want to customize, such as the door handle in a door family. In the Properties panel, under the Graphics section, click on Visibility/Graphic Overrides. Then, choose the Edit command to open the Family Element Visibility Settings dialog box, as shown below.
2. In the Family Element Visibility Settings dialog, you will find two main sections: View-Specific Display and Detail Level. If you uncheck options like Plan/Ceiling Plan View, Front/Back View, Left/Right View, or When cut in plan/ceiling plan (if category allows), the selected component will not appear in those corresponding views. The last option controls whether components that can be cut in plan or ceiling plan views are visible in section or cut views.
3. If you leave the View-Specific Display boxes checked, you can control visibility by detail level. For example, unchecking the Coarse detail level means that the component will not appear when the project view is set to coarse detail.
4. For instance, when editing a door family, you might uncheck the Medium detail level under Visibility/Graphic Overrides for the door handle, as illustrated in the image.
5. After completing the edits, load the family into your project. In a 3D view, switch the detail level to Medium—the door handle will be hidden. Switching to Coarse or Fine detail levels will make the door handle visible again, as demonstrated in the image.
In summary, by understanding and configuring Visibility/Graphic Overrides during family editing, you can precisely control when and where components appear in your project views. If a component does not show up as expected, check both the project view’s visibility settings and the family’s own visibility overrides to troubleshoot.
