How to Create Window Frame Families in Revit
1. Click on the Revit New button to enter the family module.
2. Open the metric window family template, such as:
• Plane
• Facade
3. Open the Family Types dialog box. Here, you will see three sets of parameters: height, width, and default window sill height. These parameters represent the size of the window openings on the wall in interior design. The interior decoration process starts from these base dimensions. After adding substrates, decorative panels, window frames, window sills, and other elements, the overall size will differ significantly.
The purpose here is to use these numerical values in the family types table to address most of the issues that arise when creating window frames or designing different types of window frames for interior decoration.
4. Next, we will create the substrate. Choose materials such as wooden boards, MDF, plywood, or particleboard. Because actual construction projects often have deviations in the size, position, and shape of window openings compared to design requirements — for example, variations in wall thickness, the placement of window sashes inside or outside the wall, and left-right alignment corrections — it’s important to make the thickness and depth of the lining board adjustable in all directions.
In Revit, use the Create and Stretch commands. Draw a rectangle on the reference plane using the Rectangle tool and lock its constraints.
5. Enter -20 in the offset field to define the thickness of the lining board.
6. Use the Dimension tool to label each edge of the lining board with its size.
7. After selecting the Dimension tool, click on Tags in the menu bar, then choose Add Parameters. Fill in parameters such as:
- Thickness of the lining board
- Thickness under the lining board
- Left thickness of the lining board
- Right thickness of the lining board
This allows you to control the thickness of each edge of the substrate individually. Test each parameter by adjusting the values to see the changes.
8. Click the confirm button to exit the dialog. Then switch to the Floor Plan view and open the Reference Elevation panel, as shown in the image below.
9. Select the lining panel and drag it slightly towards the exterior wall to set the labeling parameters.
10. Two parameters need to be set here: one for the extension depth into the wall, which accommodates changes in the window’s position within the wall; and one for the wall thickness to meet design requirements for closing off coatings, wallpaper, and other decorative finishes.
Use the interior wall line as the baseline for dimensioning, then add the appropriate size parameters. Finally, click on the family type to test the adjustments.
11. In Attributes, add material properties. Then, go back to the Family Types dialog, add materials, and press Confirm. This completes the creation of the lining board.
