Setting Up Dimension Annotations for Mechanical and Electrical Pipeline Drawings in Revit
After completing the 3D modeling, a 2D plan is typically generated to guide construction. Below is a brief overview of common issues encountered when labeling, using duct annotations as an example.
1. Removing Units (mm) from Air Duct Dimensions
Adding units such as “mm” after duct dimension labels often results in overly long annotations that occupy excessive space and detract from the drawing’s appearance, as illustrated below.
This issue stems from the project’s unit settings. To resolve it, open the Project Units dialog, locate the duct size under the HVAC category, click the Format button, and set the unit symbol to “none,” as shown in the image.
2. Adjusting Annotation Direction for Vertical Ducts
When labeling ducts oriented vertically, the annotation text may remain horizontal and fail to rotate according to the duct’s direction, as demonstrated below.
To fix this, select the tag, navigate to the “Attributes” section, and under “Direction,” change the setting from “Level” to “Vertical,” as shown in the figure.
3. Removing Unwanted Prefixes in Height Annotations
Height labels sometimes include unwanted prefixes such as “BF,” “H,” “+,” or “-” in expressions like “BF+3050” or “H-3050,” as seen below.
To remove these prefixes, first enter the family editing mode. Select “Bottom Elevation” and locate the label wording in the “Attributes” panel. Under “Graphics,” open the dropdown list “Tags” for editing and delete the unwanted text such as “BL,” as shown.
To remove the “+” or “-” signs, open the unit format settings for “Bottom Elevation,” access the Format dialog box, and uncheck the option labeled “Display positive values with + (plus sign),” then confirm by clicking OK, as depicted in the figure.
Summary: Through this guide, it becomes clear that modifying tag units and attributes, as well as editing tag families, can significantly improve the clarity and aesthetics of your Revit drawings.
