How to Replace "Layout" with "Rotate and Stretch" in Revit

In Revit, “Rotate + Stretch” Replaces “Layout”

Producing tension bars requires adapting various shapes to meet different specifications, such as angles, radii, lengths, and materials. Traditionally, the “Layout” function has been used for this purpose. However, this method presents challenges during actual production:

Initially, the layout path for the steel bars is drawn, and angle parameters are defined, as shown in the image below. Once the driving angle parameter is set, it becomes evident that the arc section cannot maintain an absolute tangent relationship:

Solution:

To overcome this issue, a shift in approach is necessary. Instead of using the “Layout” command, the combination of “Rotate + Stretch” should be employed.

The process begins by creating two rotations. Next, define a parameter for the rotation’s end angle in the properties panel and adjust it to 135 degrees. Then, in 3D view, select the four cross-sections shown in the figure below as working planes for stretching. This allows the creation of stretch operations that lock in place with the corresponding cross-sections. Finally, add any required geometric and non-geometric parameters as needed, completing the simple reinforcement modeling.

Summary: From this discussion, it is clear that the original “Layout” command cannot accomplish the intended goal. Instead, combining “Rotate” and “Stretch” commands, paired and locked together, achieves the desired effect. This insight applies broadly in Revit projects: if a default command falls short, alternative commands can be used. For example, when modeling a ramp with a bend—such as one leading into an underground parking garage—the standard ramp command might not suffice. Instead, you can replace it with floor slabs by adding points and controlling their elevations. Each method offers advantages and drawbacks, so the best choice depends on the specific project requirements.
