How to Modify Spatial Properties in Revit to Redefine the Vertical Length of a Space
Note: This guide assumes that the following settings are selected: “Calculation of Area and Volume” under the “Options” menu in the “Design” tab, specifically within the “Room and Area” panel dropdown list (default settings).
Start by creating or opening a section view that displays the space you want to modify.
If you need to create a new section, ensure that the section line intersects the space in the floor plan so the space is visible in the section view.
Make the space visible within the section view.
Hover your cursor over the space and select it when it highlights.
The shaded area representing the spatial volume will highlight in red.
At this point, you will see two drag controls—one at the top and one at the bottom—with their corresponding dimensions. These controls and dimensions indicate the vertical length of the selected space.
- The top drag control and dimension represent the height offset.
- The bottom drag control and dimension represent the bottom offset.
In the “Attributes” options panel, under the “Restrictions” section, you can modify the following properties:
- Vertical Length: Adjusting this will reposition the drag controls and update the shaded area to reflect the new vertical length.
- Upper Limit: Set the reference elevation for the upper boundary of the space.
- Height Offset: Define the offset from the upper limit. Both positive and negative values are accepted.
- Bottom Offset: Define the offset from the reference or bottom elevation. Positive and negative values are accepted.
If the vertical length extends beyond the room’s boundary element (such as the floor or ceiling), the space will snap to that boundary. However, dragging the controls and adjusting dimensions will still indicate the specified vertical length, as illustrated below.
Once modified, the vertical length of the space is redefined, and the volume will match the updated specifications.
Note: The elevation itself cannot be modified as it serves as the reference or bottom elevation of the space.
After making the desired changes, click Confirm, then select Modify to apply the updates.
