How to Draw Contours for Curved Paths Using the Layout Command in Revit
When creating a family in Revit, the layout command involves defining a path and a contour, where the contour is perpendicular to the path. As illustrated below, drawing outlines becomes challenging when the path is winding or curved.
Once the path is completed, there is no available plane parallel to the contour surface for drawing, as shown in the image.
For example, attempting to draw a contour or circle in the front elevation view may cause distortion, resulting in an elliptical shape instead of a perfect circle, as demonstrated below.
Switching to a 3D view does not resolve the issue easily, since it remains difficult to find faces parallel to the work plane, as depicted in the figure.
To address this, it is recommended to first draw a temporary path parallel to an existing plane before creating the required curved path, as shown in the image.
After completing this initial path, draw the outline on a plane perpendicular to it, as illustrated.
Next, create the corresponding contour as demonstrated in the figure.
Once the contour editing is finished, do not finalize the layout command just yet. Instead, switch back to the Draw Path mode, as shown below.
Remove the first temporary path. The work plane with the contour will automatically transfer to the next path. Finally, complete the layout command as shown in the illustration.
