Today, we will discuss the Overview and Introduction of BIM Application Status in China and Abroad. Currently, members of BuildingSMART include Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, the French-speaking Alliance, the German-speaking Alliance, the Iberian Alliance, China, Japan, South Korea, the Nordic countries, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.
Here is an overview of BIM application status among these BuildingSMART member countries:
(1) United States: One of the earliest adopters of BIM. Since 2007, the primary approach has been submitting 3D BIM information models. In 2008, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) proposed integrating various workflows comprehensively with BIM as the core method, fundamentally transforming traditional architectural design thinking.
(2) United Kingdom: In 2009, the London Underground system used BIM as the platform for designing and constructing the entire line. The UK also developed BIM modeling standards known as the AEC (UK) BIM Standard.
(3) Singapore: Among the pioneers in investing in automated regulatory verification research. BIM is applied to manage project documentation throughout the entire building lifecycle, including urban design review, architectural review, structural review, temporary construction permits, fire safety, legal completion certificates, and regular structural inspections. Since 2010, BIM has been mandatory for public works design and construction, and from 2015 onwards, it is required for all public and private building projects.
(4) China: The Shanghai Tower project in 2010, Shanghai’s tallest building, mandated BIM model submission and used BIM as a collaborative platform during construction. Many large buildings in major cities have adopted BIM technology. Design research institutions and private enterprises have invested significant manpower and resources, accelerating BIM development. For more details, please refer to the Analysis of the Current Status and Future Development Prospects of BIM Applications in China.
(5) South Korea: Established a national BIM development project plan and released the “BIM Application Guidelines for the Construction Industry” in January 2010. This guide provides detailed specifications on essential elements, conditions, and methods for building owners, architects, designers, and others adopting BIM technology.
(6) Denmark: BIM models and IFC standards are mandatory for public works projects exceeding two million euros.
BIM Application Scenarios in Various Countries and Regions

| General Administration Bureau | BIM adoption is mandatory. | ||
| Coast Guard | All personnel involved in construction projects must use BIM. | ||
| Norway, Finland | Yes | Private Enterprises | BIM adoption encouraged. |
| United Kingdom | Yes | London Underground System | In 2009, BIM was used to integrate design and construction of 29 new stations and the entire line. |
| Denmark | Yes | Public Projects > €2 Million | Use of BIM and IFC (3D geometric data standards) is mandatory. |
| Hong Kong, China | Yes | Developers | BIM adoption is promoted. |
| Mainland China | Yes | Design Research Institutions and Private Enterprises | Many large urban buildings have implemented BIM technology. |
| Japan | Yes | Academia and Industry | BIM research and application have begun. |
| South Korea | Yes | BuildingSMART Organization and National BIM Development Project | Kyung Hee University is developing the eQBQ (e-Quick Budget Quantity) system, while Seoul National University researches safety performance improvements in construction. |
| Singapore | Yes | CORENET Executive Committee (Cross-departmental) | Led the development of Electronic Plan Checking Systems for automated approval. Since 2010, public works fully utilize BIM, and from 2015, all public and private buildings require BIM submission and construction. |
