BIM Software Tip: How to Cut Openings in Structural Beams, Supports, or Columns Using REVIT
Navigate to the Commonly Used tab, then select the Entrance panel, followed by According to the Surface.
Next, choose the plane corresponding to the component where you want to add the opening—for example, select the plane where the column is located.
Use the Draw tool within the panel to create openings on beams, supports, or columns. When drawing openings in structural elements using the rectangle option, you can specify a radius to create rectangles with rounded corners. This design helps avoid sharp corners where stress could concentrate.
After drawing, click the Mode panel in the ribbon and select Complete Editing Mode to finalize your changes.
Note: The Face Opening tool allows you to cut openings in various structural elements such as beams, supports, or structural columns. Beam openings are designed for faces that intersect vertically or horizontally through the main and secondary axes of the beam, which are typically vertical or horizontal. Keep in mind that a beam opening will cut through the entire element—for instance, it cannot cut only one flange of a wide flange beam.
Each beam, support, or column provides two vertical planes for openings, aligned with the main and secondary axes of the component. It is important to note that curved beams are not considered the effective main body for beam openings.
