BIM Software Tip: Revit Component Naming Standards
In Revit, naming families is crucial because it establishes a standard. Setting clear naming conventions early on makes later processing much simpler. Of course, everyone has their own preferences, and each design firm often follows its own standards. Here, I will share my personal approach.
1. Wall Naming:
Location of Use – Main Material – (Decorative Layer Thickness) Main Thickness (Decorative Layer Thickness)
2. Floor Naming:
Usage Location – Structural Material – (Surface Layer Thickness) Structural Thickness (Decorative Layer Thickness)
3. Door Naming:
Door Type Code – Width × Height
4. Opening Naming:
Width × Height
5. Window Family Naming:
C – Width × Height
6. Curtain Wall Naming:
MQ: “Curtain Wall Number”
7. Column Naming:
Side Length b × Side Length h
8. Beam Naming:
Beam Width b × Beam Height h
