BIM Software Tip: Revit Hole Dimensioning
During the design process, it’s common to create numerous openings in floor slabs. Accurately representing the dimensions and positions of these openings in your views is essential, often requiring multiple dimension annotations. Here’s a useful tip to streamline this task.
When dealing with openings that extend vertically through multiple levels, it’s best to use vertical shafts whenever possible. The advantages include:
1. Vertical shafts can span the entire height of a building—or a selected elevation—by creating openings that simultaneously penetrate roofs, floors, or ceilings. This allows you to draw the opening just once.
2. To draw the opening for a vertical shaft, select the symbolic line and sketch the desired opening representation. Once completed, you can place the opening symbol at any point where the vertical shaft intersects a cut plane. This approach saves time by eliminating the need to repeatedly draw hole symbols.
3. When dimensioning, select the annotation for the opening, then copy this dimension to other relevant views. This method reduces the chance of losing dimension annotations during copying.
