BIM Software Tip: Guidelines for Using Revit Primitives and Families
Note: Elements and families are the most commonly used and essential components in Revit. Following these guidelines will help you use Revit elements and families more effectively.
Guidelines:
1. Start by familiarizing yourself with the default content libraries included with Revit, as well as any custom libraries created by your company. This allows you to reuse existing elements instead of creating content from scratch, and also gives you access to Revit’s online content.
2. When you create a new type or modify an existing type within a family, save the updated family back to the library folder. Doing so enables the new family type to be used in other projects and by other team members.
3. Gain a clear understanding of the structure of system families, such as ducts and pipes, along with component families like roof units and pumps. This knowledge will help you design buildings that meet or exceed energy efficiency standards.
4. While working within the view window, hover your cursor over an element to see its family and type information in the tooltip. Be careful not to click on graphic elements to avoid making unintended changes.
5. Use the Project Browser to navigate to the Families directory. Expand the list to view the component families loaded in the current project, then expand further to see the names and types of each family. You can also drag elements directly from the Project Browser into your model.
