BIM Software Tip: How to Add Custom Parameters to System Families in Revit
Have you ever wondered how to add custom parameters to system families like walls and pipes? This is a common question, so I decided to write a technical guide to help clarify the process. Using pipelines as an example, it’s important to first understand the difference between shared parameters and project parameters. (For detailed definitions, please refer to the official F1 help documentation.) Once you grasp these concepts, follow the steps outlined below.
Follow the instructions shown in the pop-up dialog box. Whether you choose project parameters or shared parameters will depend on your project requirements. I will explain the specific differences between these two types in a future technical post.
Pay close attention to the parameter settings indicated by the red circle in the diagram. Deciding whether the parameter should be a type parameter or an instance parameter depends on its intended use. For example, my parameter Pipeline factory batch is set as a type parameter because it represents a batch of pipelines rather than a single instance.
After clicking OK, select the pipeline and open the Edit Properties dialog box located in the upper right corner of the property panel. When you view the type properties, you will see the custom type parameters you have added!
The same principle applies when adding custom parameters to walls.
