BIM Software Tip: Why Don’t Temporary Dimension Annotations Appear for Lines Drawn in Revit Masses?
When drawing walls and other components in Revit projects, temporary dimension annotations typically appear. These annotations allow you to adjust the position of components easily. Interestingly, the same concept applies when working with masses. Lines drawn within masses can also display temporary dimension annotations—although sometimes they don’t. Have you noticed these subtle differences?
If you draw a line without selecting the 3D snap option, the line will display temporary dimension annotations:
However, if the 3D snap option on the options bar is enabled while drawing lines, temporary dimension annotations won’t appear. Instead, the endpoints of the line segments will show drive points.
Because we often draw lines at different elevations, we usually keep the 3D snap option turned off. When 3D snap is enabled, it becomes difficult to determine whether the drawn lines lie on the same plane.
