BIM Software Tip: Replacing Material Appearance Causes Revit to Crash
If you try to replace the rendering appearance of a material in Revit 201X, the Autodesk Revit application may crash and display a “stop working” error message.
Cause: The crash is related to the rendering appearance library preview.
Workaround: Follow these steps to avoid the crash:
1. Go to Manage > Materials.
2. Select the Rendering Appearance tab.
3. Click the down arrow next to the preview image to open shape options and rendering quality settings.
4. Set the quality to Rendering – Draft quality.
5. Click OK to close the material dialog box.
6. Then, navigate to Manage > Materials > Rendering Appearance tab > Replace…
7. Change the quality setting to Rendering – After Sketch quality. At this point, Revit should no longer crash.
After switching to the Sketch quality and confirming that the rendering appearance library functions without crashing, you can usually set the preview quality back to Medium or High without causing further crashes.
