Exploring the History and Future of Shaoxing Hotel
The Shaoxing Hotel traces its origins to the Lingxiao Pavilion, a charming architectural complex featuring white walls, black tiles, winding corridors, small bridges, flowing water, and lush greenery. This design strongly reflects the characteristics of Jiangnan residential architecture. Over the past 60 years, the hotel has undergone multiple renovations and expansions, resulting in a diverse architectural style.

(BIM work)
The newly constructed lobby spans 2,600 square meters, featuring a single floor with a height of 14 meters at the highest point of its sloping roof. This design invites visitors to form a fresh impression of the renovated and expanded Shaoxing Hotel.

Function and Spatial Organization of Shaoxing Hotel
The south entrance of the lobby serves as the primary and most optimal access point, naturally establishing a north-south axis. However, considering the hotel’s current landscape and functional layout, this north-south axis is not the main orientation. Instead, an east-west landscape axis is formed by the courtyard in front of Lingxiao Pavilion, the water courtyard before Zhiyu Building, the VIP Building, and the sixth guest room building. The newly constructed lobby aligns with and complements this east-west axis.

Transformation: Preserving Tradition with a Modern Interpretation
The new lobby’s roof design features a four-sided metal sloping roof set atop a modern square base, creating traditional spatial sequences with front, rear, and side courtyards. The roof is precisely positioned at the intersection of the new north-south and east-west axes, adopting a classic double-eave form. The lower eave matches the original lobby’s roof details at the southeast corner, while the upper eave incorporates modern materials such as steel, glass, and grid-like sheds, transforming the structure into a contemporary and expressive architectural statement.

The new lobby successfully reestablishes the hotel’s north-south and east-west axis order, presenting a fresh spatial and streamlined relationship.

Harmony: Embracing the Secluded and Natural Essence of Mountains and Waters
Chao Zongbing, in his “Preface to Painting Mountains and Rivers,” wrote: “The quality of mountains and rivers is both engaging and spiritual.” This concept inspired the overall “landscape idea” behind the design. Using a “reclusive” palette of black and white ink tones combined with a muted gray scheme, the design emphasizes a spirit of naturalness and freedom, creating an artistic ambiance akin to a serene, misty landscape.
