How to Create Auxiliary Beam Families in Revit

Creating Revit Auxiliary Beam Families

Start by creating a new family template and selecting the metric structural framework for beams and supports. Within the family parameters, change the material behavior to concrete. Remove the default beams provided by the system, then switch to the left elevation view to draw reference planes that define the beam’s width and height.

Use the stretching tool to create the beams. Next, select the left component view to draw and assign the structural materials accordingly.

After completing the stretching process, return to the reference elevation view to adjust and lock the beam length.

Modify the beam’s height and width as needed, then proceed to draw the haunched section of the beam. While in the reference elevation, use the stretching tool along the center (front/back) reference plane to define the haunched shape. Add annotations to assign the relevant parameters. Adjust the position of the haunched section in the reference elevation and lock it in place.

Use the mirroring tool to replicate the haunched section to the opposite end. Lock it using the alignment tool. Finally, employ the connection tools to join the beam with the haunched section, completing the haunched beam family.
