How to Create Docking Claw Panels in Revit
Start by opening the docking claw family. Select the claws and rods, make them visible, and add the necessary parameters. Create type parameters for each corner: top right, bottom right, top left, and bottom left.
Next, convert each of these parameters into instance parameters. This allows you to control the docking claws individually once the family is loaded into the panel. After editing the family and saving the changes, the default settings will update accordingly.
Create a new family, choosing the metric curtain wall panel template for your drawing. Define a reference plane, standardize it, and assign an offset parameter.
Switch to the elevation view and use the stretch tool to draw the panel. Lock the geometry, then change the subcategory to “panel.” Add a material parameter to complete the stretching process.
Align and lock the top edge of the panel to the offset reference line you created earlier in the plan view. Add annotations to the panel and introduce a panel thickness parameter. Set the panel thickness to 20 and the offset to 10.
Load the docking claw family into your project. Use the alignment tools to position it correctly and lock its location. Select the docking claw family, click “Edit Type,” and use the button next to the glass thickness parameter to link it to the panel thickness parameter.
This links the glass thickness of the docking claw directly to the panel thickness parameter.
Return to the elevation view and edit the docking claw family. Select the middle reference line at the front and inside of the docking claw and change it to a strong reference. This enables the docking claws to be centrally locked within the panel family.
Use the mirror and copy tools to place docking claws in the other three corners. Make sure to lock the reference planes in both elevation and plan views for each docking claw. In the properties panel, select each docking claw and check only the corresponding corner (e.g., bottom right for one). Repeat this for the others.
This setup ensures that when multiple docking claws are assembled together, they will not overlap.
