Understanding the 5W1H of BIM 4D Modeling

We all know that the 5W1H method is widely used in management to clearly convey essential information for project planning. This includes: Why the project needs to be completed; What should be accomplished; Where the work should take place; When it should be finished; Who is responsible for completing it; and How it will be carried out. But how does this framework apply to BIM Technology? Today, the author will explore the 5W1H of the BIM 4D model with you.

The BIM 4D model integrates the spatial dimensions of a BIM 3D model with the dimension of time. Building a 4D model requires a complete BIM 3D model combined with a detailed construction schedule. Each phase of construction progress is linked to various 3D objects in the model, allowing these objects to reflect changes as the project advances. This results in a construction model that visually represents the current status of the project.

Using 4D visualization for project planning and control offers advantages beyond those of 3D alone. It adds the time dimension, enabling better management of schedule flow and control. Additionally, it can incorporate critical information such as volume, area, materials, costs, and more.

During the project planning phase, BIM 4D models serve as an effective communication and coordination platform. Potential issues at different stages of the project can be identified early by reviewing the status each phase presents in the model. Furthermore, the intuitive visual interface facilitates clear communication and collaboration among various contractors, ensuring the overall schedule is feasible.

4D simulation fully captures the status of a 3D model over specific time periods or work types within a project. Planners can visually communicate planned construction procedures to all personnel in a clear and understandable way. It also shows the quantities of materials and construction costs for each stage. When used for progress reporting to project owners, BIM 4D models convey the 5W1H information more effectively than traditional 2D drawings like schedules and Gantt charts.

For example, consider the construction stage model of a construction platform. The purpose of this stage is to allow construction vehicles to access the site smoothly (Why). The model components include steel beams and platform plates (What), assembled in the area shown within the model (Where). The linked 3D model and schedule clearly display the construction timeline (When). Based on planned productivity, the responsible platform construction contractor is identified (Who), and the construction method follows the sequence demonstrated in the 4D model (How).

When applied to construction site logistics, engineers can plan material storage locations for each stage, as well as parking and deployment areas for large machinery such as forklifts, trucks, and ready-mix concrete vehicles. Project managers can also quickly assess whether the project is on schedule or delayed by referring to the 4D model.

Through this explanation, we have gained an initial understanding of the 5W1H of the BIM 4D model. In fact, BIM 4D modeling has been widely applied in China, with projects like Shanghai Tower and China Zun demonstrating extensive use of this technology. The author encourages colleagues who have participated in or experienced BIM 4D modeling to share their insights and experiences, so we can learn and grow together.
