Seamlessly Switching Between Built-in Models and RFA Family Files in Revit Projects

Switching Between Built-in Models and RFA Family Files in Revit Projects

Revit software distinguishes between built-in models and loadable families. Built-in models cannot be directly saved as family files. Below is a step-by-step method to save built-in models as family files.

1. First, select the built-in model in your project that you want to convert into a family file, as illustrated below.

2. After selecting the built-in model, click on the “In-Place Editing” option to keep the model editable, as shown in the figure.

3. Next, create a new family file using the Metric Conventional Model family template, as demonstrated.

4. To facilitate the workflow, use the “Tile Windows” command for easier navigation between windows, as depicted.

5. Click on the project file to select the built-in model, then use the Clipboard command to copy the model. Switch to the new family file, click the dropdown under “Paste,” and choose Paste from Clipboard. This action converts the built-in model into a family file, as shown in the illustration.

Summary: By following these steps, you can save a built-in model as a separate family file, making reuse much easier.
