Understanding How Revit Defines Elevation Header Families

Revit Elevation Header Family Overview

In Revit, the elevation header family is shared across multiple disciplines. As a result, elevation systems for architecture and structure often coexist within a single project file. To streamline the drafting process, these elevation systems are typically separated by discipline. Below, we will explain how to modify Revit’s built-in elevation header families and save them as custom families tailored to your design needs.

(1) Open the Elevation Family: Go to Application → Open → Family. In the pop-up dialog, select the file Elevation Heads_Up.rfa and click Open. Refer to the image for the button location.

(2) Adjust the Labels: Within the elevation header editing area, select the Name text. Then, in the Properties dialog, click the Edit button as shown in the image.

(3) Edit the Tag: In the Edit Tags dialog box, enter Architecture: as the prefix, type F as the suffix, and click Confirm. You will notice that the text in the elevation header now reads Building: Name F, as illustrated in the screenshot.

(4) Save as a New Family: Navigate to Application → Save As → Family. In the dialog that appears, save the modified elevation header as Building elevation.rfa. Click Save to complete the process. The button location is shown in the image.
