Adding Feature Lines to Surfaces in Civil 3D

Feature lines are essential for defining surface characteristics and controlling triangulation along these lines. By preventing triangulation across feature lines, you create a more precise triangular mesh surface model.

Display Source Polylines and Adjust Surface Styles

Navigate to the Commonly Used tab, then to the Layer panel, and open the Layer dropdown menu. Click next to the layer named EG_LEAKLINES.

The 3D polyline representing the edge of the existing road pavement layer (EP) will appear on the east side of the site.

Select the surface, right-click, and choose Surface Properties.

In the Surface Properties dialog box, under the Information tab in Surface Characteristics, set the Surface Style to Contour Lines and Triangles. Click OK to apply.

The surface will now display contour lines and triangles representing the existing ground (EG) surface triangulation.

Create Feature Lines from Polylines

In the Toolspace, go to the Prospector tab, expand Surfaces, then expand the EG surface definition. Right-click on Definition, then select Add.

In the Add Feature Lines dialog box, enter Edge of Pavement Layer – Existing Road in the Description field. Leave other settings at their default values, then click OK.

You will be prompted to Select Objects. Use the Zoom and Pan commands to locate the two blue 3D polylines on the east side of the site.

Zoom in closely so you can clearly see the triangles intersecting the polylines.

Select the polylines and press Enter to confirm.

The surface triangulation will update accordingly. The edge feature lines for the pavement layer will be applied, adjusting the triangular mesh surface along these feature lines to refine the surface model.

Next, go to the View tab, open the 2D Navigation panel, and click Zoom to Extents to fit the graphics window to the surface area.

After adding feature line data, you can freeze layers containing the feature line source data to simplify your workspace.

Return to the Commonly Used tab, open the Layer panel, and access the Layer dropdown menu. Click next to the EG_LEAKLINES layer to freeze it.
